Welcome to Room 17 - Where independence is key. Class Happenings:Welcome back to another funful year at Fairview. It's hard to believe that the summer has passed by so quickly and another school year is just around the corner. I am very excited to be meeting several new students this year as well as working with some of the 'veterans' from last year. WE (and I do mean WE as in families, school and community) have a lot of work to do before June 2012 when most of this class will cross the stage and move on to high school! About Me: For those of you who don't know me very well..let me give you a little history about myself. I come from the southeastern WI area and grew up in Muskego. I am the youngest in my family and have an older brother who has multiple disabilities, so you could say I'm a veteran in the family aspects of special needs. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a degree in Special Education in 1988 and have been teaching ever since. My first experience was in St. Louis, MO with the Special School District of St. Louis County. Then I moved to Japan for 2 1/2 years to teach English at Berlitz International Language School. Upon returning to the USA, I returned to Wisconsin and secured a position with Milwaukee Public Schools. This will mark my 21st year with MPS. This past June (2011) I was able to celebrate another professional accomplishment by obtaining my Master's of Education degree from National-Louis University. I am an avid advocate for the rights and needs of people with disabilities and will work with you to secure the best educational facility for your child that is available.
At Fairview I coach the chess club for grades 1 - 8 and encourage the kids to attend various chess tournaments throughout Wisconsin. The team has brought back several trophies to adorn Fairview's tropy case :)
Fairview Cafe: Once again we will be running our monthly Fairview Cafe where your child helps to plan, promote, prepare and serve a lunch to interested staff members. This program has been very successful in the past and it only looks to grow more in the future. In December we will be running our 3rd Annual Cookie Walk. So look for more information on donations as we get closer to December.
As always, our classroom doors are open to you at any time. As a consideration towards the students a little heads up if you are coming would be greatly appreciated so we can prepare our students for a visitor. (Some students don't adjust well to sudden additions or subtractions from the class)
What's new with our room staff?
Ms. Osheim continues to work towards her degree in education to move into the role of being a classroom teacher. If all goes well, she maybe doing her student teaching in our room! This is a VERY exciting prospect!
